Reed Chandler's longtime political ally, New York Senator Terry Scott, is holding a campaign fundraiser in the City.
(Well, officially, it's just a party. Unofficially . . . it's been a long time since a truly successful politician ran a clean and legally funded campaign, at least in the circles the Chandlers inhabit.)
This means that all the Chandlers have to be in New York to attend, including Cal. He's a vital part of the Chandler family image, after all, Senator and Mrs Chandler's son. He exists to reflect well upon them, and at parties like this, he knows just how to do that. He's practically a professional.
They've been there for a while. Cal charms everyone he talks to, friendly with the men and borderline flirtatious with their wives, in a sweetly wholesome G-rated kind of way.
(He's been distinctly less wholesome with Senator Scott's daughter, two years older and as bored with the game as he is. They've hooked up a couple times before, and there'll probably be a third before Cal leaves New York.)
Cal decides he has earned a break, and makes his way to the bar to order a drink. He can't get away with a real drink, unfortunately, but he can order a Coke and pretend there's rum in it.
