AU-squared: someday it will have a name

Cal could study for the sociology test coming up on Monday. It's not like his grade in that class is so stellar that he can afford to bomb it.

But he could also play sounding board for Sherlock's latest "only in Sunnydale" case.

Guess which one he picked?

"And anyone who can get in there unnoticed is a threat we should take seriously, sir," Pepper persists.

Which, of course, is why she is right behind him instead of maintaining a safe distance and trying to talk him out of potential suicide over the intercom instead.

Never mind that.

Cal looks over at the sound of voices.

This is about to get a lot more interesting than talking to Jarvis was.

"He's a kid," Tony remarks from the other side of the closed door. "Pepper, there's a college kid in my basement."

[identity profile] chandler-npc.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Appearances can be deceiving, sir," Pepper says tightly, but she still leans in a little to have a look for herself.

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Cal is looking at them, too. They're both older, although there's something about that that's not quite syncing up either, but this time Cal doesn't pay attention to that, because where is Sherlock?

[identity profile] inhandcuffs.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Direct as always:

"Hi! Who the hell are you and what are you doing in my house?"

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hi."

Cal hesitates.

"I'm not sure yet. I didn't put myself here."

Okay, so there doesn't seem to be a Sherlock around to verify with one look that Cal isn't a threat. (There are other reasons he kind of hates that, too, but they're not important right now.) So - he's gonna have to do that himself. Somehow.

"I don't suppose you've ever heard of Milliways?" He doubts very much that Milliways actually had anything to do with this, but if this Tony is already comfortable with the idea of other worlds, that would really help.

[identity profile] inhandcuffs.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"...No?"

What?

—actually, come to think of it:

"Why are we talking about Douglas Adams now?"

[identity profile] chandler-npc.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
". . . I don't think we are."

Pepper takes a step forward, focused on the kid.

"You're saying Milliways put you here," she says skeptically.

Because the only thing that is always true about Milliways is that someone has to hold the door for you if you're going to visit their world, and there's no one else here.

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Cal looks relieved. It would be nice if Tony knew, too, but at least someone does.

"No," he says. "But I am from a different world. I know both of you there."

He's only met Miss Potts a handful of times, since she's busy on the East Coast with Stark Industries, but it still counts.

[identity profile] inhandcuffs.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)

"Pepper, make this make sense."

[identity profile] chandler-npc.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Milliways is real, sir," Pepper says matter-of-factly, her eyes still on the boy. "Adams probably borrowed the idea from having visited himself. It's a nexus between worlds that appears to some people when they open doors at home."

Pepper has been visiting for years. How else could she get all her paperwork done on the days when Tony has been particularly - time-consuming?

[identity profile] inhandcuffs.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
He takes a beat to digest this.

"...Okay, and now it makes sense. Back to the part about college kids in my basement."

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that was easy. Thank god.

"I don't know what happened," Cal admits. "But nothing here is the same, so. It must be a different world."

Where Tony and Miss Potts are older (maybe it's a different year, too?) (but there's still something not quite right about that) and don't know him - oh. Right.

"My name's Cal Chandler," he adds.

[identity profile] inhandcuffs.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait wait, no.

"Pepper, why didn't you tell me you had concrete evidence of alternate universes?"

[identity profile] chandler-npc.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Because she knew that if he didn't get a door of his own, she'd never hear the end of it.

"It never seemed to come up," she says.

[identity profile] inhandcuffs.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Okay, well, next time you radically redefine the laws of physics, tell me about it."

Back to Cal!

"And you, if Douglas Adams didn't put you here, what did?"

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't -" Cal is frowning, thinking carefully.

"Jarvis triggered an alarm." He'd only heard it for a second or two, but he'd definitely heard it. "Our Jarvis, I mean. Something went wrong."

. . . come to think of it, when the last time he even saw his Tony for more than about three seconds at a time? He's been really absorbed in something or other.

[identity profile] inhandcuffs.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"Your Jarvis? Does alternate me have a college-age boyfriend?"

Because the only person in this universe who might conceivably call Jarvis an 'our' is Pepper, and Cal is not a Pepper. But he is sort of pretty. Tony isn't sure what he thinks of that.

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"- What? No. I, uh, hang out there a lot."

This doesn't really seem like the time to get into the fact Sherlock and Tony are more his family than his actual family is.

[identity profile] inhandcuffs.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Lightbulb!

"Alternate me is your age?"

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh!"

Duh.

"Yeah. A year younger, actually. Twenty. We graduated high school together, he skipped a year."

[identity profile] inhandcuffs.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"Of course he skipped a year, he's me. Okay. For a minute there I was thinking some weird early-midlife-crisis shit."

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Cal laughs a little, taken aback.

"Yeah, no. I don't really go for guys almost twice my age, sorry."

It's a thing.

[identity profile] inhandcuffs.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Cheerfully: "No, good. That's a good thing."

...What are they even talking about, again?
