Sunnydale AU: An Illicit Visit (no, not that kind)

There is some definite disapproval going on in the Chandler compound over Cal's refusing to go along with the implicit decision that the Starks (especially Sherlock) are not the best company for him. It's not the first time he's pushed such a ruling - far from it - but this is something of a special case. Whether it's the shooting or the fact that Sherlock and his identity issues are generally glossed over in proper society with "He just couldn't handle his parents' death, the poor thing, at least his brother is made of sterner stuff" that causes greater concern . . .

Well. Cal has the feeling his knows the answer to that.

His own accidental death could at least be used to the Chandlers' advantage, after all.

The obvious response to all of this is, of course, to invite Sherlock over to visit.

"We'll have to sneak if we don't want to spend twenty minutes listening to Mother, though."

He hadn't really meant it as a hint or anything, but he really does want to smoke. The afternoon has felt weirdly long, which he's starting to learn is an effect Milliways will have even when he's only there a little while. Like his body knows it's made some sort of impossible journey or something.

That and it's been more eventful than usual.

"I can't take this home with me, of course." He sets it down on the shelf. "It won't fit in a pocket and I need both hands to climb down the wall."

"- oh, right."

That makes sense.

"I can bring it to school tomorrow."

Pause.

"The wall?"

"I can hardly stroll out the front door."

"Well, I knew that."

And it's about as far as he had gotten with that thought process. He's not the one who has to do it, after all.

"Getting out should be an interesting challenge. I can't use the same way I came in. Really, Mr Beardsley ought to encourage me to come back. It will do wonders for his security."

Cal looks amused at the thought.

"He'll love that, I'm sure."

"Why not? He can close up the gaps as I exploit them. Free penetration testing."

Cal can't not think the obvious reply (I don't think he swings that way), even though he won't say it. It still flashes across his face.

"I don't really think he's gonna see it that way."

Too bad Cal won't get to see his face when he finds out.

"You have a filthy mind," he says, laughing. "And I can't see why he wouldn't. I am hardly about to assassinate you."

"I didn't say anything." Sherlock's the one talking about penetrating stuff. For free.

"Yeah, I hope not, that'd suck."

"And I didn't say you have a filthy mouth, did I? Anyway I'd make a terrible assassin. I hate killing vampires and have no intention of starting on humans."

"Why? They kill us first."

Pause.

"Right?"

"Yes, vampires prefer to survive by killing humans, and killing them first is often the most expedient course. Which does not mean I have to like it."

Explained like that, Cal has to concede,

"Okay, true."

Enjoying killing is probably kind of weird, anyway. Even if it is for the greater good.

"I don't consider killing a vampire ethically different from killing a human, although I will concede it probably has less emotional impact. So I will only do it in defense of myself or another."

"Well, I didn't really think you went out looking for them."

Who would do that? That would be pretty stupid.

"I'm hardly the Slayer," he agrees.

"The what?"

Cal pretty much stuck to the vampire trivia when he was looking at Sherlock's database. (With a brief detour into vengeance demons, because for reasons he couldn't begin to explain, it seemed relevant. Somehow. Somewhere.)

Cal takes this in.

"That sucks," he says feelingly.

"Indeed it does."

"Also a good reason not to go out looking for them."

The whole dying frequently thing, he means. Even with the superhuman spell thing going for them.

- this vampire shit is just getting more and more grim.
