Sunnydale AU: such an old-fashioned word

Three days after Stane's death, the worst of the work is over. The fake death is set up and scheduled for tomorrow; all that remains is the execution.

So to speak.

Cal is at the desk in his room going over it all one last time, just to be sure, when Danielle knocks and tells him he has a visitor.

"Tony Stark to see you, sir."

Cal kind of saw this coming, sooner or later. He sits back and stretches. "Okay, yeah. Send him in."

Cal nods a little.

"Good," he says. "The press conference sucks the most. Just - don't take questions. It's easier."
toblameforit: Drinking orange juice from the carton. (+= endeavouring to make breakfast)

[personal profile] toblameforit 2010-11-22 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, believe me, I won't."

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-11-22 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Good," Cal says again.

"The body's all taken care of, so after that, all you have to worry about is the funeral."

The normal part. The part everyone has to deal with anyway. Cal got lucky on that - Mother took over, and he was all too glad to let her. Most of it was preplanned, anyway, because that's how the Chandlers operate.
toblameforit: Striving for innocence. (+= wanna do my homework for me?)

[personal profile] toblameforit 2010-11-22 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Sherry's got that part," he admits. "Me, I'm figuring out the company. Fuck. I know I said I could go to high school and be a CEO, but that doesn't mean I wanna."

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-11-22 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
This part is easier to talk about. Cal doesn't have to pick his way around his hatred for Stane, and he doesn't have to think about Sherlock.

He makes a sympathetic face and sips his coffee.

"No ideas on anyone who can help you out with that?" he asks.
toblameforit: Skeptical or questioning. (-= poking your head out of Baker Street)

[personal profile] toblameforit 2010-11-22 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Nope. I mean, I'm sure there's a ton of people who'd love the job, but..." He shrugs eloquently.

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-11-22 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," Cal says. "Well. If there's anything you think I might be able to do . . ."

He shrugs a little, the corner of his mouth quirking up.

"Stark Industries is about to become socially relevant again." To put it mildly.
toblameforit: Smiling a little bit. (*= you jerk! :D)

[personal profile] toblameforit 2010-11-22 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Tony snorts. "No kidding. You can help Sherry stop me from punching anybody who acts like an asshole about it. It'll be a two-man job."

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-11-22 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Sounds fun," Cal says dryly. "I'm in."
toblameforit: Drinking orange juice from the carton. (+= endeavouring to make breakfast)

[personal profile] toblameforit 2010-11-22 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Seriously."

It's possible he's carrying a little leftover rage from his last publicly relevant bereavement.

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-11-22 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," Cal says. "I know."

He can see it, simmering, and he doesn't really blame Tony for it.

At least this way Tony will never find out exactly how much he should be wishing he could punch Stane, too.
toblameforit: Thoughtful, perhaps mischievous. (+= pretend we're twins)

[personal profile] toblameforit 2010-11-22 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," he agrees with a sigh.

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-11-22 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Cal takes a long swallow from his coffee, then sits up in his chair to put the mug down.

"Maybe after all this is over," he says after a moment, "we can try to find Milliways and just hide for a week. Try and get our shit together."
toblameforit: Hands over face. (/= have I been a bad clone daddy?)

[personal profile] toblameforit 2010-11-22 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"God, wouldn't that be great," Tony agrees.

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-11-22 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
His gaze falls on the list and the graffiti littered over it, and oh yeah, now he remembers. He casually picks it up and folds it in half, saying,

"- Did Sherlock ever tell you I ran into his double in there?"
toblameforit: Smiling affectionately or smugly. (*= recent successes)

[personal profile] toblameforit 2010-11-22 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. He showed me the movie, too. Alternate universes are weird."

If that was a distraction technique, it worked like a charm.

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-11-22 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
As a matter of fact, it was.

Cal opens a drawer in his desk enough to slip the paper inside.

"Seriously," he says. "Time travel."

("I'd think it'd be easier to say you travelled in time than to say, 'I'm gonna be the guy from the book.'")

He pauses, because suddenly, that seems a lot less bizarre.
toblameforit: Skeptical or questioning. (-= poking your head out of Baker Street)

[personal profile] toblameforit 2010-11-22 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Actually, considering Milliways, time travel shouldn't be that big a stretch. But yeah, it's kinda different."

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-11-22 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
". . . Yeah."

Cal glances up from shutting the drawer with a wry smile.

"But I guess I started it when I told him about the vampires, so."
toblameforit: Smiling a little bit. (*= you jerk! :D)

[personal profile] toblameforit 2010-11-22 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Tony laughs.

"Yeah, I'll bet."

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-11-22 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"To make sure he wasn't our Sherlock in the future," Cal finishes.

". . . Do you ever wonder sometimes if you're hallucinating your entire life? While you're sober, I mean?" It's an important distinction - Cal feels that wondering such a thing while high is totally normal.
toblameforit: Grinning. (*= cranking up the charm)

[personal profile] toblameforit 2010-11-22 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, but I probably should."

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-11-22 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Cal's answering laugh ends on a sigh, because all he can think at the moment is that he really, really wishes the past three days were one long bad trip, but that's one of those things he's not going to let himself say to Tony.
toblameforit: Tucking his shirt in. (-= the definition of reasonable)

[personal profile] toblameforit 2010-11-22 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It's very possible that Tony is thinking something similar anyway.
