Sunnydale AU: simple words

School is, finally, over.

Cal has shoved everything he's not bringing back home into his locker (so, pretty much everything) and now he's gone to find Tina.

"Not yet," Cal says. "She'd like it if I had some kind of understanding with a girl from our social circle, though. You know, engaged to be engaged kind of thing."

There are people who think he and Jess Scott are more serious about each other than they really are (that is, at all), which suits them and their parents just fine. It's convenient.

- which, he realizes, he's going to have to explain to Tina if things keep going as they have been.

(God, the boyfriend thing. He's so bad at the boyfriend thing.)

"I think my mom is just glad I made it through high school without having kids."

Which... she should probably not have brought up.

"Not like I..." She laughs. "Wow, could I have said anything more awkward? It was a fear of hers she hounded me about constantly. That's all. I'm not- like that. Having kids in high school, I mean."

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Cal laughs and squeezes her hand.

"It's okay," he assures her. "I wouldn't care if you were."

This is, in a way, the root of all the relationship problems he's had. He's supposed to say he cares and then secretly be glad she's not a slut, because that means she won't cheat on him or something. That's how guys are supposed to think. But Cal has never figured out how to be jealous when it comes to sex.

[identity profile] take-youaway.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
"You wouldn't care if I were a teen mom?"

He's nuts. She would care.

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
"I wouldn't care if you -"

He is definitely not supposed to say "slut."

"- were a person who might become a teen mom."

The car unlocks at their approach, which is something Cal is pretty sure it didn't even do until recently. Maybe Jarvis taught it somehow or something.

[identity profile] take-youaway.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, I'm not that kind of person," she says in all seriousness. Just to be clear.

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
He glances over at her.

"Okay," he says, trying to match her seriousness.

[identity profile] take-youaway.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
"I mean, I know you're-"

She bites her lip.

"You're different from the rest of them, Cal. I guess maybe I am a little, too."

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Cal looks at her, not sure exactly what she meant by that. Obviously she's different, but how is he different?

"I - just don't care about that stuff, I guess."

- the passenger door opens itself for Tina. (Cal has to get his own door.)

[identity profile] take-youaway.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
She smiles at him and nods. "Cool."

Then her door opens.

"How did-"

She points to the door, surprised. "Was that done with a remote control?"

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Cal smiles back. The smile turns into a grin at her reaction.

"Nope. Tony gave it to me for my birthday. It has a bunch of modifications that he did. It still keeps doing new shit, I've never seen it do that before."

Not even for Sherlock. Or Tony himself, for that matter.

"He promised it won't fly off to Mars or anything, though."

[identity profile] take-youaway.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Tony knows how to fix up cars like that?"

This is way beyond 'fixing up' a car. She knows that. She just doesn't know how else to say it.

As she slides into the passenger seat, she runs her hands over the leather seats. "This is one sweet ride, Cal."

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, yeah," Cal says as he gets into the car. "He's an engineering genius. He -"

He pauses, remembering just in time that he is not sure that Jarvis is on the list of things he's allowed to talk casually about. Instead, he finishes,

"- he can write AIs and things, this was probably easy."

[identity profile] take-youaway.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
"What are AIs?"

She hasn't heard that term before.

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, uh, artificial intelligence," Cal clarifies. "Like with computers."

He gives her a sheepish smile.

"Sorry, I forget not everybody talks about that kind of thing every day."

He manages to spend quite a bit of time at the Stark residence.

[identity profile] take-youaway.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, like robots?"

Robots are cool!

"Wait a minute. Do you guys actually live in the Matrix?"

That movie is really the only science fiction she knows, besides a couple of Star Wars viewings as a kid. This is something that could be changed!

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
Cal laughs.

"No, they live in a regular house."

Sort of.

"And I don't actually live with them. Well. Sometimes it seems like I do." He's thinking of Jarvis again, and how the front door opens for him before he even gets to it. "But. I don't."

[identity profile] take-youaway.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah, but the Matrix isn't a physical space. It's a state of mind. There is no spoon. So I think you totally live there."

She's just teasing, of course.

Wait until she meets Jarvis.

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Cal thinks about this as he guides the car out onto the road. (If Tina thinks his driving is bad now, she should have tried riding with him in cars not designed to subtly accommodate his quirks.)

"Nah. I have spoons," he decides, laughing.

[identity profile] take-youaway.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
She laughs, too.

"Well, okay, then."

She doesn't think his driving is bad. It's just- different. She feels safe enough.

"You're pretty cute when you laugh."

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
"That's why I do it," he says brightly.

He looks pleased, though. He likes the compliment coming from her in a a way he wouldn't from most people. She's not sucking up or trying to flatter him. She means it.

[identity profile] take-youaway.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
She gets the feeling that she said just the right thing, so she pushes on.

"But then again, you're really cute anyway, so the extra cute while laughing is icing on the cake."

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Cal continues to look pleased.

"I better be cute," he says. "Otherwise people are gonna wonder how I get away with hanging out with such a hot girl."

[identity profile] take-youaway.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Tina looks confused. Who is he talking about? Is there another girl?

She doesn't even consider that he might be referring to her.

[identity profile] americas-son.livejournal.com 2010-12-27 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
After a few seconds' silence, Cal glances over at her.

"That means you," he says. "Uh. Sorry I wasn't clear."

Even if he's not sure how he might not have been clear.
