Sunnydale AU: An Illicit Visit (no, not that kind)

There is some definite disapproval going on in the Chandler compound over Cal's refusing to go along with the implicit decision that the Starks (especially Sherlock) are not the best company for him. It's not the first time he's pushed such a ruling - far from it - but this is something of a special case. Whether it's the shooting or the fact that Sherlock and his identity issues are generally glossed over in proper society with "He just couldn't handle his parents' death, the poor thing, at least his brother is made of sterner stuff" that causes greater concern . . .

Well. Cal has the feeling his knows the answer to that.

His own accidental death could at least be used to the Chandlers' advantage, after all.

The obvious response to all of this is, of course, to invite Sherlock over to visit.

"We'll have to sneak if we don't want to spend twenty minutes listening to Mother, though."

Well. Cal's ignoring him.

Okay, not really. Actually, he's starting to think about rolling a joint; usually, he'd be stoned by now. But the whole thing about the smell of his room is making him leery of bringing it up.

He glances toward the bookshelf a couple of times - his stash is there, tucked neatly into what used to be an Indiana Jones boxset. It's the twenty-first century version of a hollow book, and Cal knows full well that one of those wouldn't exactly blend into his book-free environment.

After the second glance:

"Indiana Jones?"

Cal pauses, trying to settle on an answer to that.

He goes with,

"Yes?"

"An ignoble use for him, don't you think?"

Of course.

"I keep the discs in a CD case," Cal says. "There's nothing ignoble about that."

He respects Indy.

"Well, that's all right then."

Cal just rolls his eyes.

Sherlock laughs.

The DVD's menu is still playing in a loop on the television; Cal picks up the remote to turn it off.

"Don't worry, I'll wait till you leave."

He shrugs, and crosses the room to reunite the DVD with its case.

He hadn't really meant it as a hint or anything, but he really does want to smoke. The afternoon has felt weirdly long, which he's starting to learn is an effect Milliways will have even when he's only there a little while. Like his body knows it's made some sort of impossible journey or something.

That and it's been more eventful than usual.

"I can't take this home with me, of course." He sets it down on the shelf. "It won't fit in a pocket and I need both hands to climb down the wall."

"- oh, right."

That makes sense.

"I can bring it to school tomorrow."

Pause.

"The wall?"

"I can hardly stroll out the front door."

"Well, I knew that."

And it's about as far as he had gotten with that thought process. He's not the one who has to do it, after all.

"Getting out should be an interesting challenge. I can't use the same way I came in. Really, Mr Beardsley ought to encourage me to come back. It will do wonders for his security."

Cal looks amused at the thought.

"He'll love that, I'm sure."

"Why not? He can close up the gaps as I exploit them. Free penetration testing."

Cal can't not think the obvious reply (I don't think he swings that way), even though he won't say it. It still flashes across his face.

"I don't really think he's gonna see it that way."

Too bad Cal won't get to see his face when he finds out.

"You have a filthy mind," he says, laughing. "And I can't see why he wouldn't. I am hardly about to assassinate you."

"I didn't say anything." Sherlock's the one talking about penetrating stuff. For free.

"Yeah, I hope not, that'd suck."

"And I didn't say you have a filthy mouth, did I? Anyway I'd make a terrible assassin. I hate killing vampires and have no intention of starting on humans."

"Why? They kill us first."

Pause.

"Right?"

"Yes, vampires prefer to survive by killing humans, and killing them first is often the most expedient course. Which does not mean I have to like it."
