Sunnydale AU: let's try that again

The Milliways vacation was, Cal thinks, exactly what they all needed. He definitely came home to discover that things seemed a lot more manageable than they had before he left for New York, and not just because Obadiah Stane will officially never be his damn problem again.

(Peter, he knows, suspects that something happened while Cal was away, but Cal calmly ignores his less-than-subtle hints for an explanation. What would he even tell Peter?

Although he does kind of love imagining the look on Peter's face if he found out exactly how far Cal was out of his reach, and for how long.)

There's more time for life beyond the household now, and so it is that Cal is resuming something resembling regular visits to the Stark residence once more.

On the other hand, it's not hard to figure out from context, or at least get a rough idea, which is why Cal says,

"Probably, yeah."

The vocabulary thing clicks.

"It means, like—Sherlock," Tony says helpfully.

Cal laughs.

His vocabulary has been improving, slowly but steadily, since he met Sherlock. Words are easier to remember when he's heard Sherlock use them, especially in moments like these.

(And it's long since stopped bothering him when either of them notices he hasn't understood something. Unlike some people Cal knows, they don't point it out just to make him feel stupid.)

"Attentive to detail," he elaborates.

"And annoyingly pushy about it."

"Is that in the dictionary?" Cal asks.

"Under my name? Thankfully no."

"Under pedantic? Basically yes."

Cal glances at them both and laughs.

"Gotcha," he says.

Tony grins.

Which is about when their waiter shows up with a tray full of pizza, which he distributes quickly.

Dinner is served.

Conversation immediately comes to a screeching halt, at least on Tony's end. Nom nom nom.

Yeah, it's gonna be a few minutes before Cal comes up for air. Lunch was a while ago.

"I concur," Sherlock announces after a few minutes. "This is the best pizza in the state."

Cal swallows and agrees,

"It's even better fresh."

And not worrying about someone having tried to kill any of them.

"Yeah, I gotta say. Blows Domino's right out of the water."

Cal laughs.

"You could do their next ad campaign. That'd be a great slogan."

"...All of the commercials I can think of on that theme are bad. And full of explosions."

"Exploding pizza," Cal says thoughtfully.

Then he shakes his head.

"That'd be a waste."

"I know, right?"

"We'd definitely have to avoid blowing up the pizza," Cal decides.

"Yeah. So not worth it."

"Plus Domino's would probably sue."

Which would be boring.

"Yeah, that'd be a bummer. I don't have anything against Domino's. They just don't measure up."

"Not their fault," Cal says.

Even if it kind of is, in the narrative's considered opinion.
