Sunnydale AU: definitions

First thing about college that sucks: Classes started two days before Sunnydale High.

Cal is also not excited about his classes themselves.

He does have to admit, though, that not having to be awake practically before sunrise has been pretty awesome. And today he got out at roughly the time Sunnydale High does, which he'll have to mention to Sherlock - there are three days in his week when Cal will be able to give him a ride home.

. . . although, judging from the ancient red truck with the hot girl driving it that Cal passed on his way up the driveway, that may not be an issue.

He's still smirking as he heads for the door.

Cal blinks a couple of times. Any possible attempt to stop staring at the skirt is unsuccessful.

". . . Hi."

Sherlock raises his eyebrows.

"Yes," he says, "as I have repeatedly discovered today, this is one of the few ways it is still possible for me to seem even less normal."

Cal is gotten really good at sticking things in a mental box labeled things Sherlock does, don't worry about it without giving it any further thought.

But.

He's kind of forgetting about that box right now.

"Why?"

"Because I could? It is rather too late for me to start worrying about social norms. I thought it would be interesting. It was." He shrugs. "There you have it."

Cal shakes his head, a bit helplessly. He's still standing in the doorway.

"You are so weird sometimes.

". . . is this going to be, like, a thing?" Is Cal going to have to get used to this?

"Possibly. I haven't decided. I'm certainly not planning to give up on trousers; they have too many practical advantages."

"- Right."

Like being what guys are supposed to wear, for example.

Sherlock closes his eyes again.

Cal is just going to keep right on hovering uncomfortably in the doorway.

"Come in," he adds.

"Or go have a smoke while I change into something more socially acceptable."

Cal relaxes a little, guiltily relieved.

"Okay." He steps into the room.

"I see your day has been rather dull until now," Sherlock observes.

"I had classes." Same difference.

He doesn't choose a seat right away, but he does move clear of the door.

"As I said, dull."

Thinking back: "But you must have passed—" she does not want to be Miss Swan and that goes just as well for when she is not present "—Bella on your way in."

"Right." Somehow, he'd forgotten all about the mysterious truck girl for a minute or two there.

He brightens a little. (Talking about girls is good. Talking about girls is normal. It's a thing guys do.)

"So who is she?"

"My new Biology lab partner. Mildly interesting."

There are not a whole lot of people in the world that Sherlock would call mildly interesting.

"Her father is the chief of police."

Didn't Sherlock take Biology last year? Whatever, not the point.

"Charlie Swan? Yeah, Peter's had to deal with him a few times. I didn't know he had a daughter."

That is the point.

"'Mildly interesting,' huh?" Cal looks almost comfortable as he contemplates this.

"And what does Mr Beardsley think of the man?"

"That he's in over his head and more of a pain in the ass than the last chief of police." But Peter still does what he wants where the Chandlers' security is concerned.

"So what's Bella like?" Come on, this is the obvious point of interest here. Cal gives Sherlock a pointed look. If he isn't going to go change, he can at least talk about girls.

Now this is Sherlock Stuff he can understand. For Sherlock, she thinks is the equivalent of another guy saying, she's fucking hot. Cal grins.

"Awesome."

Sherlock grins back.

"Good heavens, you're not still on about finding me an Irene, are you?"

"When was I ever not on about that?" Cal asks, unapologetic. "It just kinda got backburnered for a while."

He'd known it could take some time. Irene Adlers don't just happen.

"Well, I have no indication from Bella of any such interest."

But he is not immediately shooting down in flames the idea that he might harbour an Irene-like regard for her. Potentially. At some time in the distant future, perhaps.

"She drove you home," Cal points out.

(He doesn't say While you were wearing that. He's not thinking about that.)
