There was one and only one thing about this that was lacking:

It wasn't a meal. It was barely a snack. And it definitely wasn't about eating.

Now it's well into nighttime, and Cal is hungry.

Time to go do something about that.

When Cal enters the garage, Sherlock is leaning against the hood of his car with his hands in his pockets. The bandage on the side of his neck has been replaced, and there is another, somewhat larger bandage on the other side.

Cal eyes him, gaze lingering on the larger bandage.

"Evening," he says, casually.

"Evening." He smiles faintly. "Going out to eat?"

"I was thinking about it," Cal says mildly.

It had indeed occurred to him that this might be a problem, but in a house that does its own surveillance, he couldn't think of any way to deal with it that would be any better than just being direct.

Equally mild: "Since I am not willing to kill you myself to stop you murdering your dinner, I thought I might try asking nicely instead."

Cal shrugs.

"I don't have to kill to feed."

It's just easier. Dead dinner can't talk about what happened, and Cal is too recognizable right now to let witnesses wander around.

"I'd rather you didn't," he says. Asking nicely.

"I kind of got that," Cal says. Helpfully.

"I won't keep you, then." He straightens up, glancing at the basement door as he does so.

It opens to admit Sherlock.

"Thought I might find you two here," he says. "Mind if I tag along, Cal? The company around here is exquisite, but the menu is limited."

"Pretty much what I was thinking," Cal agrees. "Sure, you can come." And then after he does that, they can leave That is to say, Cal pulls his keyring from his pocket and heads toward the car.

"Cheers. Don't glower, sweetheart, it doesn't suit you." This last is to Sherlock, naturally.

"Bite me," he invites in Tony's voice, stepping up to give Sherlock an insufferably domestic peck on the lips.

Cal can't decide which is less appealing: going right back to the Stark home to spend the next twenty-four hours inside when he doesn't actually have to, or spending the night on a silent drive with Sherlock.

He briefly toys with the idea of dropping Sherlock off and then just driving away and not coming back, but he's not quite ready to go there yet.

In the end, he picks the house. At least there he has a better chance of being able to be annoyed all by himself.

Sherlock steps out of the car with a cheerful air, possibly for the sake of Tony, who is across the room tinkering with something.

Tony looks up, frowns, abandons the disassembled engine on the table, and crosses the room to give Sherlock a hug.

Sorry, man. Tony always knows.

Great. Now he's the bad guy before he's even gotten out of the fucking car. Is there any reason why he shouldn't just pull back out of the parking spot, step on the gas, and see how fast Jarvis can reopen the garage door?

It takes a few seconds for the obvious one to hit: because running and hiding was what he did as a human. He's not like he used to be anymore. That's kind of the entire point of the last couple hours.

Fine. Cal gets out of the car and heads out toward the basement, hands in his pockets.

"...guess he doesn't want a hug, then," Tony concludes.

Sherlock ruffles Tony's hair and kisses his cheek.

"Sometimes," he says fondly, "you are a bit of an idiot."

No, he doesn't fucking want a hug. Leave him alone.

Alas, it is not to be.

Although it is fairly likely that Sherlock, waiting on the other side of the basement door and looking pensive, has something other than hugs in mind.

Cal, for his part, looks annoyed to find him there. Then doubly annoyed when he realizes he hadn't been paying enough attention to hear or smell that Sherlock was there in the first place.

This night is bullshit. Can he have a rewind?

Well, there was that door in the way at first.

"I'm sorry," he says as it swings shut.

Still. What good are vampire senses if he can't use them to avoid things that are irritating?

"- What?"

"That was a pointless bit of self-indulgence I let loose on you before you went out, and I am sorry for it."
